Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. The disease causes the degeneration of motor neurons, which control muscle movement, leading to muscle weakness, paralysis, and eventually death.

The exact cause of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Mutations in genes such as SOD1, C9orf72, and FUS have been identified as risk factors for developing the disease. Additionally, exposure to environmental toxins and traumatic injuries may also increase the risk of developing ALS.

Support groups and respite care services can provide caregivers with much-needed relief and help them manage the stress associated with caring for someone with ALS.
